Welshie’s Deli honored for support of troops Welshie’s Deli honored for support of troops

SEA ISLE CITY -- Welshie's Deli of Sea Isle City has been recognized by the New Jersey Legislature for its efforts to raise funds and sponsor supply donations for deployed US troops, and organization known as Support the Troops NJ announced recently.

State Sen. Jeff Van Drew and Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matthew Milan nominated Welshie's.

To date, Welshie’s has collected more than $1,200 to pay shipping costs for over 100 packages that have been sent to deployed troops by Support The Troops NJ.

Welshie’s owner, James Welsh, and employees Katie Vansant and Rocco Parise are the people responsible for these efforts, including a patriotic display in the deli that encourages customers to donate. Their efforts also inspired one customer to donate thousands of comic books, a favorite distraction of servicemen.

Support The Troops NJ President Regina Shuster surprised James “Jimmy” Welsh by presenting him with the award in the deli.

“You don’t think about recognition when you do this. You only think about how much these men and women are sacrificing for us. I’m just glad our customers are so generous,” said Welsh.

“Welshie’s has been one of our biggest supporters,” said Shuster. “We couldn’t do what we do without people like these here at Welshie’s.”

Welshie's is located at 4203 Landis Ave.

Support The Troops NJ ships donated supplies to troops from New Jersey serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since October 2007, it has shipped more than 1,000 packages weighing over 10,800 pounds.
