OCEAN CITY – A home fire extinguisher helped contain a Wesley Avenue kitchen fire on Sunday afternoon.

The Ocean City Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire 3:01 p.m. at a side-by-side duplex at 1909 Wesley Ave. According to Dept. Chief Bill Bowman, firefighters arrived to discover a grease fire.

“The report came in as a structure fire, there was a lot of smoke coming out of the windows and it appeared that the whole house might have been on fire,” he said. “They were cooking french fries in oil and the grease caught on fire. The blinds on the window caught on fire, and it spread to the cabinets. There were wicker baskets on top of the cabinets and they caught on fire.”

The occupants of the beachfront duplex had a chemical fire extinguisher on hand, he noted, and used it on the fire.

“They doused the flames,” he said.

The fire was still smoldering when firefighters arrived. Firefighters helped make sure the fire was completely out and helped overhaul and clean up the mess, he said.

There was some smoke damage to the building, but Bowman said the fire was contained to the kitchen. The occupants were able to remain in the home, he said.

No one was injured.
