OCEAN CITY — The city hosted its annual July Jubilee Monday, June 25 through Friday, June 29, capping off the week with Xtreme Hermit Crab Wrestling.

July Jubilee is a week of silly activities at the Music Pier, leading up to Fourth of July. This year’s activities also included salt water taffy sculpting, paper clip sculpting, French fry sculpting and “That’s the way the cookie crumbles” (chocolate chip cookie sculpting).

On Friday, about a dozen children brought out their pet hermit crabs to compete. The hermit crabs are placed shell down inside a mini wrestling ring. This “extremely nonviolent” event rewards the hermit crab that can flip over the fastest.

Josh Dechnik, 10, of Skippack, Pa. – last year’s Peewee Division Champion – came out again to compete and won. So did Jackie Carroll of Wyncoat, Pa. and Suzy Hercher of Hunting Valley, Pa. Jacob Jardel, 7, of Washington Township also won a competition. The winners received ribbons and trophies.

The city will continue its celebration on Wednesday, July 4 with a kite flying competition at 5 p.m., entertainment and a fireworks spectacular shot from a barge in the ocean at 9:30 p.m.
