OCEAN CITY — Workers completed laying sod, planting flowers, installing benches and fencing and painting the parking lot at the site of the former City Hall Annex at Ninth and Asbury on Friday afternoon, just in time for the Spring Block Party Saturday, May 5.

The pocket park is a temporary solution for what to place at the former annex site after the city knocked down the building in March. The plans originally called for a downtown welcome center, but were put on hold as members of City Council and some city residents began debating about the best use for the property.

Mayor Jay Gillian said last month that the site would be fixed up in time for Block Party while the final plans are being contemplated. Gillian said at the time he would still like to see a facility on the site that offers public restrooms and access to certain city services, as well as parking.

Two days before the deadline he gave himself to have a pocket park ready by the Block Party, Mayor Jay Gillian checks on the progress of the plantings and sod being installed at Ninth and Asbury. Joining him on Thursday afternoon, May 3 at the site are business administrator Mike Dattilo and Public Works Director Mike Rossbach.
