GALLOWAY – Too bad a stolen GPS device couldn’t tell a hitchhiker that he might be headed to jail – or at least that an approaching vehicle was a marked police car.

Just before 3 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 Anthony Hibbs, 35, of Atlantic City was arrested by police in the Four Seasons development.

Officer Kevin Jorgensen, responding in his cruiser to a report of a suspicious person in the area of Moss Mill and Pitney roads, came upon Hibbs, who, apparently not realizing it was a patrol car, raised his thumb in an attempt to hitchhike a ride, police said.

Officer William Schroer arrived on scene to assist, and it was determined that there was an outstanding warrant for Hibbs’ arrest.

In addition, Hibbs had a GPS device in his possession that police were able to trace back to a residence on Raleigh Street. Police contacted the resident and learned that the GPS unit had been stolen from his vehicle, according to reports.

Hibbs was charged with burglary to a motor vehicle, theft, possession of stolen property and hitchhiking.

He was incarcerated in the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility on the outstanding warrant.
