The fifth annual Inspirational Walk celebrating survivors of breast cancer and honoring those who have lost the fight will be held 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 in Avalon.

The walk is a three-mile loop beginning at Avalon Community Hall at 30th Street and Avalon Avenue.

The event is one of the fundraisers organized by Team Birds for Boobs, a group of Philadelphia Eagles fans who participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure, according to team captain and founder Jennifer L. Maher.

The Komen 3-Day is an annual walk that raises money to support breast cancer research and awareness.

“We walk 60 miles over the course of three days in and around Philadelphia. In order to walk in the event, each team member must raise at least $2,300 as required by Susan G. Komen For the Cure,” Maher said. “This will be my seventh 3-Day Walk and the sixth 3-Day Walk for our team.”

Birds for Boobs team members spend several months training to prepare for the walk and devote the entire three-day weekend to the cause, she said.

Over the past several years the team has been one of the largest teams participating in the Philadelphia 3-Day and one of the highest producing teams. The entry money is raised through many events held locally throughout the year.

“Our fundraising total to date is $4,887,” Maher said. “We have four team members this year, including myself, so our goal is $9,200 so each team member can participate. So, we have a long way to go, and hopefully the Inspirational Walk will help us get closer to that goal.”

Birds for Boobs also raises money through beef and beers, wine tastings, bus trips and other events.

The team roster also includes Maher’s sister, Sherry Anne Phillips of Rio Grande, Shantelle Delconte of Cape May, and Jennifer Hirsch of Cape May Court House. All are repeat walkers for Birds for Boobs.

The team was formed in honor of Maher and Phillips’ mother, Betty Anne Borland of Cape May Court House, who runs a day care center.

“We walk the 60 miles every year in her honor,” Maher said. “She just celebrated her 60th birthday on July 31, marking her 42nd year as a survivor. She was only 18 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Since its inception in 2007, Birds for Boobs has raised more than $265,000, according to its website. Its goal is to ultimately raise $1 million for breast cancer research.

Additional information about Birds for Boobs is available at www.birdsforboobs.org, and more information about the 3-Day Walk can be found at www.the3day.org.

Traditionally, the Inspirational Walk in Avalon is part of a team-sponsored Think Pink Weekend with a cocktail party following on Sunday, Maher said.

“Due to circumstances out of our control we were unable to do the cocktail party this year, so this is the only event of the Think Pink Weekend,” Maher said.

The registration fee for the Inspirational Walk is $15 per walker; the first 50 people registered will receive a free water bottle. Kids and pets are welcome to join in the fight.

Walkers can register in advance at www.birdsforboobs.org  or 7-8 a.m. the day of event.
