EHT judge approves delay in case against Rutgers football player Tejay Johnson

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – The case against Rutgers University football player Tejay Johnson was pushed back two weeks by Egg Harbor Township Municipal Court Judge H. Robert Switzer today (Tuesday, Sept. 24) so additional evidence and the alleged victim could be subpoenaed.

Dressed in a Rutgers warm-up jacket, Johnson appeared in court and was represented by an attorney from the Atlantic City law firm of Jacobs and Barbone, who spoke on his behalf during the brief proceedings.

The Scarlet Knight athlete and former Egg Harbor Township High School football standout is charged with simple assault, second degree robbery and false imprisonment.   

Initially, Johnson and five other defendants –  Krystal Johnson, Kenzi Johnson, Stephan Johnson, Wardell Richardson and Winston Rolls, all of Egg Harbor Township –  were charged with robbery, aggravated assault and criminal restraint for their involvement in an alleged incident in June, but those charges were reduced to simple assault, second degree robbery and false imprisonment for the additional defendants and remanded from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office to Egg Harbor Township Municipal Court.

Krystal Johnson is charged with luring as well.

The police state that on June 15, a 35-year-old victim reported that he was held against his will, beaten by several suspects and had the contents of his pockets stolen at a residence on Gallant Fox Lane in the Bargaintown section of the township.

The official court docket states that Johnson and the other defendants are pleading not guilty to all charges.

Johnson has seen game time in all four of the Scarlet Knights football games this season. During the team’s win on Saturday, Sept. 21, against Arkansas, he contributed to five tackles and one solo play.

Rutgers has stated it will not comment until the proceedings are complete.

The next court date is set for Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Egg Harbor Township Municipal Building.
