Wayland Memorial Run

The 14th annual Wayland Memorial Run is 9 a.m. Sunday, May 26 at Newport and Atlantic avenues and incorporates 10k and 5k runs and a fun walk to benefit the Wayland Memorial Scholarship Fund. The event is sponsored annually by Firemen’s Mutual Benevolent Association Local 38 in association with the Ventnor City Board of Recreation. With the proceeds from the run, the FMBA has distributed $35,000 to more than 40 Ventnor college-bound students. Registration is 6:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25 in the community building of the Ventnor Library and Cultural Art Center, 6500 Atlantic Ave. or 7:30-9 a.m. the day of the race. Former Eagle to help raise funds for MBA

MARGATE – Former Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will help draw a crowd to the Margate Business Association’s 11th annual Beer, Wine, Food and Auction 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 at Steve & Cookie’s by the Bay, 9700 Amherst Ave.

Proceeds benefit the Daniel and Maria Walters Scholarship Program and the MBA Children’s Fund.

Spaghetti dinner

There will be a spaghetti dinner to benefit the Eugene A. Tighe School 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 18 at the school, 7804 Amherst Ave. Dinner is $8; early birds pay $7 from 4-5 p.m. All proceeds go to the Margate Education Foundation. Fourth annual Walk for Williams May 18 in Ventnor

VENTNOR – The fourth annual Walk for Williams is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18 beginning at Newport Avenue and Boardwalk in Ventnor.

Presented by the Downbeach Film Festival as part of Williams Syndrome Awareness Week, the walk will take place in more than 40 locations throughout the country to benefit the Williams Syndrome Association. Locally, walk coordinator Bill Sokolic of Ventnor and of the Downbeach Film Festival, will lead the walk.

‘Raising Mr. Frye’ reading

Players and Playwrights by the Jersey Shore will present a staged reading of “Raising Mr. Frye,” an original one-act play by Linda J. Severt of Egg Harbor Township, 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at the Ventnor branch of the Atlantic County Library, 6500 Atlantic Ave. The play is adapted from the authorized memoires of James Dickey, personal secretary to Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Christian Scientist Church and the Christian Science Monitor. “Raising Mr. Frye” was written in recognition of Women’s History Month. Admission is free. The play is directed by John Perovich of Mays Landing, adjunct instructor at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Call Perovich at (908) 616-7211.

Volunteers needed

The Ventnor senior citizen transportation service is a free shuttle available to all senior citizens residing in Ventnor and provides rides to anywhere in the Downbeach area of Ventnor, Margate, and Longport. In its 15th year, the program is performed by volunteer dispatchers and drivers. Anyone who can donate three hours a day, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday-Friday is encouraged to call (609) 823-7994. Leave your name and phone number on the answering machine and someone will return your call.
