DIY wedding vows

Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” By writing your own vows, you are essentially counting the ways you love your betrothed. As you take pen in hand, ask yourself:

  • What are the greatest traits of the person you’re going to marry?
  • What does marriage mean to you? Does your marriage fulfill the vision you had when you were young?
  • Is there a song, a verse or a saying that sums up your feelings? Feel free to borrow it for your vow reading.
  • Say just enough, and not too much. In a famous example, singer Kenny Loggins and his then-wife Julia Cooper not only subjected their wedding guests to a naked ceremony in a forest in the rain, they also read pages of wedding vows. The point is not to perform a soliloquy, but to sum up your feelings in a gracious and beautiful manner. Get to the essence.
