CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Zoo has welcomed three North American River Otters from the Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot, ND.

The otters, one male named “Dublin” and two females “Annie” and “Elizabeth Gertrude” will live at the zoo for least a year.  The Roosevelt Park Zoo sustained a great amount of damage due to severe flooding in that area.

“Many of their animals have been relocated to other AZA Accredited Zoos across the country while they complete repairs to damaged exhibits.  We are happy to help the Roosevelt Park Zoo in their time of need and welcome the otters to our zoo family,” said Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel.

The Northern American River Otter can live up to 25 years in captivity.  They grow to be 35 to 55 inches long and weigh between 10 and 33 pounds.

Today, all otter species are considered threatened, while at least five of the 13 otter species are listed as endangered. Although the North American River Otter is not an endangered species, its population has been severely reduced from much of its range, according to county officials.

Visit the otters from 10 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. daily.  The free zoo, located in Cape May County Park Central, 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House, is open everyday except Christmas, weather permitting.

Mark your calendar and join us at the Cape May County Park and Zoo on Saturday, December 10th for “Santa’s Family Workshop.  A free event complete with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
