PHILADELPHIA - Members of the Stone Harbor Police Department will be lacing up their sneakers this fall to raise money for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which raises money to support programs and research to eradicate childhood cancer.
Members of the department are training to participate in the Philadelphia Marathon and half-marathon, set for Sunday, Nov. 18. All donations made to support the officers will be dedicated to the efforts of the foundation.
Alexandra "Alex" Scott was born to Liz and Jay Scott of Manchester, Conn., Jan. 18, 1996, the second of four children. Shortly before her first birthday, she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that usually occurs in infants and children.
While she bravely battled her own cancer, Alex and her family continued to hold yearly lemonade stands in her front yard to raise money for childhood cancer research. News spread, and people from all over the world were moved to hold their own lemonade stands and donate the proceeds to Alex’s cause.
Alex passed away at the age of 8, having helped raise more than $1 million to help find a cure for cancer. Her family and supporters around the world carry on her legacy through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.
