Employees give to United Way with payroll deduction

WILDWOOD -- Some New Years resolutions are already long forgotten, but the United Way's payroll deduction program makes others - like making a difference in our community - much easier to keep. Maybe that's why so many local businesses are opting to participate.
“It is such a great program because it allows people to do something extremely worthwhile for their community in a way that is very convenient," said Executive Director Suzanne Nardi. "In fact, it's so convenient that many participants don't realize how the small gift that is deducted from their paycheck every week makes such a big difference."
Community-minded businesses have been participating in the program for some time, among them: the Delaware River and Bay Authority, South Jersey Gas, Atlantic City Electric and Comcast. This year, Crest Savings Bank agreed to participate, as well. For many companies, supporting residents of Cape May County through volunteerism and financial contributions is a commitment that they make with great pride.
"It's a priority for our company," said Comcast Community Affairs Manager Tom Reilly. "We have a long history of community involvement, especially with the United Way of Cape May County."
So this year, in addition to Comcast's other volunteer work and sponsorship of the annual Rubber Duck Regatta, the company has increased its participation in the payroll deduction program - 30 percent of their employees now contribute to the United Way.
"We are very proud to be involved with the United Way," Reilly said.
Those who work within the community as employees of United Way's partner agencies are proud, as well, and they have shown that pride year after year by contributing a portion of their salaries to support the United Way's work. This year, South Jersey Legal Services staff made history, when 100 percent of its employees agreed to participate in the plan.
The plan is convenient for both large and small employers to set up for their staff, Nardi said. "It's very convenient, and the money it raises is so important toward making our community a better place to live."
