Pre-Driving Program at Cape Regional

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Occupational Therapy Department at Cape Regional Medical Center offers an innovative driving assessment which was designed to provide a subjective analysis of an individual’s driving skill and on-road safety. The Pre-Driving Program uses a cutting edge, fully interactive, driving simulator. The simulator features three, full-color viewing screens, a realistic steering column, and brake and acceleration pads. The cock-pit replicates one used on a number of Ford vehicles. Drivers can select a variety of traffic scenarios, from fast-pace highways to curving mountain terrains. As a person “drives” along a course, the simulator calculates a score that indicates road safety.
The purpose of the simulator is to provide the patient with a fair and accurate assessment of the patient’s driving skills, in a safe and controlled environment. If a person’s driving assessment indicates a level of unsafe driving, the Occupational Therapy Department at the Medical Center can recommend services for treatment of problem areas, as well as discuss alternative transportation options. The program can benefit the elderly, stroke patients, and those with visual, cognitive or orthopedic problems. All of the evaluators are Licensed Occupational Therapists or Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants whom are registered and nationally board certified. The Pre-Driving Program can provide a new sense of awareness, particularly to senior drivers in Cape May County and empower them to make positive changes in their driving status.
“Staying connected to the community is an important part of our well-being,” said Keith White, Occupational Therapist at Cape Regional Medical Center. “For most of us, driving our own car is the most essential tool in maintaining an independent lifestyle. However changes in our physical, mental and sensory abilities can challenge our ability to continue to drive safely.”
